I struggled with &...Becky, thanks for the comment! I struggled with "Tess" the first time I read it too. I remember simply being overwhelmed by the relentless nature of the tragedy and pathos. It seemed that this time around I was able to recognize and appreciate Hardy's authorial intent, and look at the novel's message in the context of the time in which it was written, as well as our own. I really didn't enjoy it at all. I don't know if I just couldn't cope with the difference in values that exist between then and now, but Tess just annoyed me. I really didn't like her at all. Or anyone else in the story for that matter. I will read it again one day though because I only ever read good reviews of it. <br /><br />I just found your blog by the way and I will definitely be back!
